South Lyon is town that has a small town atmosphere with modern housing. The Historic South Lyon Hotel is located in downtown South Lyon, Michigan and is one of the many old building in downtown South Lyon, this historic landmark has been in operation for over 137 years! The community was named after Lucius Lyon, legislator.
South Lyon was first called Thompson´s Corners, this city began in 1832 when the first house was built by the widow Thompson, whose son opened a store there.
South Lyon's City center is located at 10 mile and Pontiac Trail within 5 miles of US-23 and I-96. South Lyon area covers only 3.5 square miles and is home to 11,000 residents.

South Lyon Parks and Recreation
South Lyon parks are the scene of year-round community activities such as summer Concerts in the Park, Depot Days, Pumpkin Fest and other downtown events. McHattie Park has something for everyone, including playground equipment, little league ball diamonds, sand volleyball courts, sled hill, outdoor ice skating and hockey rink, along with plenty of open spaces for picnics and outdoor fun. McHattie park is home to the historic Witch's Hat Depot Museum, the Freight House and the Victorian Gazebo.
The Pumpkin Festival is the largest annual festival in the South Lyon community, and usually takes place during the first weekend of October. Events include the children's outdoor activity venue with several large inflatable rides, games, and carnival food. Also, the Kid's Creation Station w/Monster Mural, a parade through the downtown area, live entertainment, a dog show, The Great Pumpkin & Fun Veggies Contest, photo contest, arts & crafts show, and the huge home arts contests & exhibits.
South Lyon Schools
South Lyon Community Schools are found in the southwestern corner of Oakland County, Michigan and covers approximately 83 square miles in parts of Oakland, Livingston, and Washtenaw Counties. South Lyons School history goes back to 1834 when a one-room log schoolhouse was built just east of town. Today the school district consists of two high schools, two middle schools, and seven elementary schools.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 82.8 km² (32.0 mi²). 81.2 km² (31.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it (2.00%) is water. DemographicsAs of the census2 of 2000, there were 11,041 people, 3,887 households, and 3,055 families residing in the township. The population density was 136.0/km² (352.3/mi²). There were 4,065 housing units at an average density of 50.1/km² (129.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.10% White, 0.35% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.47% of the population. There were 3,887 households out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 16.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.21. In the township the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 103.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.4 males. The median income for a household in the township was $67,288, and the median income for a family was $76,045. Males had a median income of $56,418 versus $31,565 for females. The per capita income for the township was $27,414. About 3.4% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.8% of those under age 18 and 11.4% of those age 65 or over
