You cannot ask to be on better lakes when you buy a lake house in Keego Harbor.  Keego Harbor is located on the shores of two large Oakland County Lakes,  Cass Lake and Sylvan Lake.  Cass Lake is Oakland County's largest all sports lake at 1280 acres.   Dollar Lake is also in the community.  It is just a very small lake that is connect to Cass Lake by a canal. Keego Harbor is just a very small community that came about because of the lake it sits on.  It is a community that is a mix of older lake houses and newer houses.  The community has a population of 2,970. The city originated as a real estate investment and was planned to be a resort area. The name “Keego”originally came from the Indian language which means “Big Fish”.

Keego Harbor is no different than many of our other Metro Detroit lake areas.  During the early 20th century, Keego Harbor was a resort town for wealthy Detroiters who purchased cottages because of the city's natural beauty and glow.  Who knows which of the auto barons visited Keego Harbor in the early years?  It was less than a couple hours drive even on the old muddy unpaved roads in the early 1900's.   Because of these attractions, the city even used to draw members of the Detroit's notorious Purple Gang, who like to spend their summers among the sparkling lakes of Keego Harbor.  (From stories and pictures of my grandfather I believe he ran was an underling in the purple gang).

After becoming a city in 1955, Keego Harbor today is a small, yet beautiful community. Orchard Lake Road is the main drag through town which has many stores and places that you will need when relocating to Keego Harbor MI.  The community has become one of Oakland Counties hidden gems, with a large amount of nearby water recreation.  Just to the north of the city on Cass Lake is a public state park.    Does it really have a city center?  Not really even though Cass Lake Road and Orchard Lake Road intersect in the city.  The city is surrounded by so many nearby entertainment facilities, such as the Palace of Auburn Hills, which home to the Detroit Pistons, DTE Energy Music Theater, Freedom Hill, and Meadowbrook which are all less then a 30 minute ride away to the north and west.  Oakland County MI is also the home to numerous famous shopping areas, such as the Somerset Mall and the downtown of Birmingham.

How good are the schools in Keego Harbor?  Keego Harbor is a part of the West Bloomfield School District. If you do not know West Bloomfield schools are one of the top schools in Oakland County.  You can be assured that your children is going to be prepared for college and getting the best education they can receive.  Many home buyers will choose living in Keego Harbor over Sylvan Lake or Waterford because of the schools.  There are six exemplary Schools that use a variety of technological tools. Nearly every student goes onto college, with over 94% pursuing in higher education.

One of the reasons why Keego Harbor is a great place to live is because it is a small community that has many activities to build a great sense of community. The city most always puts on events that attract residents of all ages to come together and enjoy time spent with one another. There is the Big Fish festival, which is one of the city’s largest events, and is filled with basketball, classic cars, keynote speakers, dinner and dance that happened all weekend long. This has become one of the highlighting features of Keego Harbor. The city also put son an Annual Skate night, where the entire city is invited to go out for a night of skating and other fun and exciting activities that you can enjoy with family and friends.

The Median Household income in Keego Harbor is $44,512. The median age is 36 years old. I would say that the community is a mix of blue collar and white collar workers.  It is not a snobby town, but just a simple town.  The City of Keego Harbor is very diverse, they have many races, such as White, African America, Native American, Asian and many more. 

The City of Keego Harbor is home to thriving businesses along Orchard Lake Rd, five public parks, two beach access points, a boat launch and features two of the finest lakes in the county.  So why move to Keego Harbor?  It is close to the main thoroughfare Telegraph Road.  From there you can get to anywhere in Detroit because Telegraph road connects you to I-696.  Another great feature of the town is the recreation facilities.  Here are some of them:  the West Bloomfield Trail Network that is nearly seven miles long and spans for four cities and offers hiking, cycling and cross country skiing.  The biggest draw of course is the two beach access points and the boat launch to the lake.
