Lake Orion in Lake Orion Michigan
Lake Orion is a beautiful lake is North Eastern Oakland County. It is a little north of the Palace of Auburn Hills on M-24. I would call the lake almost horseshoe shaped. It is a large lake (470 acres according to DNR maps, another source has it at 508 acres)
Lake Orion is a public all sports lakewith public access. There isn't a lot of parking but there is a boat ramp. The boat ramp is off Indianwood Rd at the west end of the Village of Lake Orion. There are 34 spaces but on a nice summer day they fill up fast so come early.
Lake Orion is 58 ft deep in the deepest spot. Like I was saying Lake Orion is almost U-shaped because there is a peninsula that almost cuts the lake in half. I like the lake because it seems like there are two lakes side by side with lots of small bays. There are five fingers (water areas that off the main part of the lake). There are also five islands. This is great I think, because you don't just go round and round in a circle like some lakes. There are different areas to boat in, and to see. You can't see all of the lake from any one spot. It will keep you interested.
Lake Orion waterfront homes and lakefront properties are pretty tightly built. Lake lots are not large. You can have an old small lake cottage next to a larger newer colonial lake front home. Over the years many of the original cottages have been torn down to be rebuilt as more modern lakefront homes. On some parts of the lake there is a road in front of the waterfront homes.
Some Lake Orion waterfront homes are close to M-24, so there is some road noise on part of the lake.
Because Lake Orion is such a great lake for skiing, jet skiing and wake boarding there is heavy fishing pressure. So if you are looking for a quiet lake with little boating noise, Lake Orion wouldn't be the place to chose. But there are plenty of spots on the lakes (the fingers and canals) that you can be away from the noise and the main lake but have all the benefits of lake living.
Lake Orion has the following fish species:Crappie, Bluegill, rock bass, and Largemouth Bass. Some walleye, some northern pike, some perch, and some smallmouth bass.
As with most inland lakes it depends on where you live on the lake whether it is sandy or a little mucky. So always ask your realtor to find out what the lakefront is like.
