DO I REALLY NEED HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE?

Yes, especially if you are getting a mortgage.  The bank usually requires 1 year of insurance paid in advance.  You mortgage person will have to contact your insurance agent and get a paid receipt.  The insurance agent and the mortgage person have to exchange information such as loan number, mortgage amount, and lender's address.  A paid homeowner's insurance policy (or a paid receipt for one) is required at closing, so arrangements will have to be made prior to that day. Plus, involving the insurance agent early in the home buying process can save you money. Insurance agents are a great resource for information on home safety and they can give tips on how to keep insurance premiums low.

WHAT STEPS COULD I TAKE TO LOWER MY HOMEOWNER'S INSURANCE COSTS?
Be sure to shop around among several insurance companies. Always check at least 2 or 3 different companies.  There is usually a wide range of prices for insurance.  Also, consider the cost of insurance when you look at homes. Newer Wayne County Homes, Oakland county homes,or Livingston County Homes are constructed with materials like brick, tend to have lower premiums. Think about avoiding areas prone to natural disasters, like flooding. If the home is in a flood plain you have to buy flood insurance which will cost you extra.  Choose a Wayne County Home, Oakland county Home, Livingston County home with a fire hydrant or a fire department nearby.

Crime rates in different cities affect homeowners insurance.  For example Detroiter's have much higher insurance premium than a Livonia Home or aNovi Home of the same size, age, and similar features.  It is because the crime rate and the amount of claims that are done in that area.  So you may be able to buy a bigger home in an area such as Livonia, Westland, Plymouth, or Northville than if you bought in a higher crime rate area.

You may get a discount if you are non-smokers,  or if there is an alarm system in the house.  Ask your agent about the discounts.  Even raising the amount of your deductible may lower the cost of your premium.  Call or see your local insurance agent when insuring your Wayne County Home, orOakland County Home, or Livingston County Home.
