Tips for Packing Like a Pro

So you have been looking at Michigan homes for sale and you have found your home of your dreams.  Whether you purchased Livonia real estate, Plymouth real estate, or any Metro Detroit home here is how to make it easier on you and your family.

Develop a master check list or use Russ Ravary's moving checklist so you won't forget something important.

1.  Sort and get rid of things you no longer want or need. Have a garage sale, donate to a charity, give to family or friends just starting out, or recycle.

2.  Start packing items that you don't use ahead of time.  Such as your basement storage room.

3.  Don't throw out everything. If your inclination is to just toss it, ask yourself how frequently you use an item, or how longs since you have used it. If it has sat in a box for ten years it might be time to give it away.

4.  Pack like items together or pack in rooms. Put all kitchen stuff in one box. Put all bathroom vanity stuff in one box.  Put all cloths from a dresser in one box. Put all your toys with toys, basement tools with basement tools.

5.  Decide what you plan to move yourself. Precious items, such as family photos,  breakables, valuables (jewelry),or must-haves during the move, should probably be hand moved.
Be sure to leave out items that your children can't live without or will be asking for.

6. Use the right sized box for the item. Loose items encourage breakage.  Wrap items well with paper or popcorn.

7.  Put heavy items in small boxes so they're easier to lift. Keep weight under 50 lbs. if possible.

8.  Tape the boxes well.  Don't over-pack boxes and increase the chances they will break.

9.  Wrap every fragile item separately and pad bottom and sides of boxes.

10.  Label every box on all sides. You never know how they'll be stacked and you don't want to have to move other boxes aside to find out what's there.

11. Use color-coded labels or write in big letters (kitchen, upstairs bedroom, basement, garage) to indicate which room each item should go in. Color-code a floor plan for your new house to help movers.

12.  Keep your moving documents together, including phone numbers, driver's name, and van number. Keep your contractors names and phone numbers handy.  Anything that you may need for move in. Also keep your address book handy.

13.  Back up your computer files before moving your computer.

14.  Pack a moving suitcase with toilet paper, paper towels, cups, soap, band aids, and anything that you may need before you unbox everything.  Carry this with you.

15.  Take a small toolbox with the essential with you so you do not have to wait for the movers

16.  Inspect each box and all furniture for damage as soon as it arrives.

Remember, most movers won't take plants.

Now you are ready to move to your new Wayne county home, Oakland county home, or Livingston county home.  Where ever you are moving to in Michigan this list will make it a little easier.

I hope these tips help you when you relocate to Michigan or just move in Michigan.  Whether it is Wayne County Real Estate, Oakland County Real estate, or any Detroit area home I want your move to be easier whether you used me as a your Realtor or your Mortgage person or not.  May your new home bring you lots of great memories.
