Flowers: Adding a few flowers around the yard is a way to add color to your front yard. You can even add a few flower pots on the porch. You can pick them up at Lowes, Home Depot or any local garden center. It is a inexpensive way to give your home curb appeal.

| |
Your grass or lawn: A freshly mowed, neatly trimmed lawn gives your house a well-maintained appearance. Pick up garbage, old bricks, and odds and ends that may be laying around. Make sure toys, lawn equipment. and garden equipment are not laying around. If you are going to list in a few months then fertilizing and putting a weed killer on it will make your grass look better. Get rid of all the old boards, barbecue grills, ladders that are laying around outside of the house. Coil up the garden hose after you use it.

| |
Sidewalks: Edge your yard if possible. Keep your sidewalks clean of leaves, ice, and snow (depending on the season). If you have major tip hazards call a cement leveler or have the concrete replaced. Give your home that neat appearance. .
|
| |
Bushes & Trees & Shrub beds: Trim up trees that are blocking the view of the house or are touching the roof or home. This will become an inspection issue so you might as well take care of it now. Trim dead branches, remove or replace any dead or dying trees, hedges, or shrubs. Prune anything that looks unkempt or overgrown. Weed shrub beds. Cut back overgrown shrubs that block windows and keep light from entering your house. We want your home to be bright and cheery. Add a layer of fresh mulch or top with stone.

Cleaning, Painting, and power washing: Power wash the vinyl siding and make it sparkle. If you have exposed wood on your house's exterior before you caulk and paint it before you put it on the market. Painting gives the biggest bang for your fix-up buck. Neutral colored paint works best. White, light grays or soft tans are safe choices for exterior walls. If your house doesn't need a new paint job, at least clean up window frames, front shutters, gutters and down spouts. (Clean the gutters while you are up there) Also, be sure to give your mailbox and front door a fresh coat of paint.

Miscellaneous Repairs: This is very important due to home inspections. If your Oakland County home comes up with a huge list of small and medium repairs it will be telling the home inspector and the buyer that you have not maintain your home. Be sure that all gutters and down-spouts are in place and cleaned out. You do not want saplings growing out of the gutters. Replace missing roof shingles, broken or cracked windows. Repair trip hazards, cracks in your driveway, and remove large oil stains. Replace or repair broken stairs, torn window screens, broken or missing fence slats, and defective doorknobs. A new door knob that is easy to turn makes a good impression on Metro Detroit home buyers. Make sure that your front and back doors, garage doors, and all windows open and close easily. Put in new high watt light bulbs. The brighter your house is the more it will stand out. Clean all the bug out of the exterior lights. Be certain that they're working properly.

Windows: Hire a window washer if you do not like to wash windows. ( I do not) Try to keep your windows clean inside and out throughout your home. Another trick is to take the screens out (put them in the garage) so the windows look brighter. When you're not home, curious buyers attracted by the For Sale sign have been know to peek through the windows to size up your house.

Garages: I myself do not think a clean garage means anything to Oakland County home buyers. A garage is a garage. The major thing most home buyers care about in a garage is storage space. If you can clear everything you don't need out of the garage. Friends and family who live nearby can be a great source of temporary places to store excess items. If you can't clean your garage out, at least keep the door closed at all times. Try to keep the number of cars parked in front of your house to a minimal. Store boats and campers else where when selling your home.
