If you are considering on moving to the Waterford Michigan area then you have come to the right place to learn a little more about the township and the real estate. I myself would consider Waterford Township to be a starter community. The majority of homes in the township are in the 1000 to 2000 square foot range. Yes there are some larger homes but over all the homes are smaller. You are not going to find huge mansions or large lake estates. There is a gated community in the township and some beautiful homes in the 2500 to 5000 square foot range, but they are not in the majority.
Waterford came into existence way back in 1834 when Michigan was first being settled. Of course with all the lakes and the Clinton River it was a natural place to settle to build a sawmill and a gristmill. The early settlers depended on water to provide power. Today Waterford calls itself a "lakeland paradise in the heart of Oakland County". Waterford lies in the almost center of Oakland County with Telegraph being to the east of the township, M-59 running through the center of the community, and I-75 to the east. Pontiac, White Lake, West Bloomfield, and Independence Township surround the township. The M-59 corridor is the heart of the city.

Like most of metro Detroit's communities it is a safe community. You are not going to find gangs running the neighborhoods, drive by shootings, or street muggings. Yes like most of Metro Detroit Waterford does have random crime, but you have that in all cities. I would recommend Waterford as an lower cost, starter home community or for buying a lake home.
