To give you an idea of how housing has changed in the metro Detroit area I will tell you when colonial home styles changed. Before 1985 most colonials were between 1800 and 2200 square feet. Standard ceiling heights were about 8 feet. Most homes had a living room, formal dining room, and a family room. But in 1985 homes styles changed. Home became more of an open layout, great rooms had soaring ceilings, master bedrooms became master suites, walk in closets became the norm. Land had become more expensive so homes became bigger and ranch homes were no longer built because the builders needed to make a profit.
