If you are moving to Oakland County due to a job transfer or a new job you may wonder what Farmington Michigan is like. Farmington is just a small town that is just 2.66 square miles in size. It is mainly surrounded by Farmington Hills. Like many of the other comunities in Southeast Michigan people will many times confuse Farmington and Farmington Hills as one and the same even though they are not. A small portion of Farmington is bordered by Livonia.
How good of a place is Farmington to live? In 2007 CNNMoney.com listed Farmington as number 55 in it's "best places to live" survey. It is tough to recognition like that, but Farmington deserves that accolade. Farmington was also ranked 27th on the list for Best to Live in 2013, citing nearly US$3 million in additional city renovations and development, bumping its rank up.
Farmington is different than Farmington Hills not only because it is smaller but because Farmington is really a small community centered around the downtown area. One of the main types of homes in the immediate downtown area are Victorian homes. Homes that were built as early as the 1850's. The community was started back in the 1820's and many of the older homes are still standing. Luckily Michigan does not have termite issues like they have down south so many wood structures are as nice as they were 100 years ago.

Overall Farmington residents are proud of their homes. Some of the homes have been painstakingly restored. You wil like driving down the street looking at the neatly manicured homes.Of course scattered in between the Victorian homes are homes of all ages, styles, sizes. These newer homes were built on empty lots or where other homes were torn down. You will find ranches, colonials, tudors, and split level homes here and there amongst the Victorian Homes.
If you are looking at communities with active downtowns like Northville, Plymouth, Milford, Birmingham, or Rochester I would say downtown Farmington is not as lively as many of those other downtown areas. People come to Cowley's and other restaurants and stores but would I say it is very active and a go to place? No it's not quite big enough of a downtown area so you do not have to worry about the traffic or out of towners. It's not going to be over busy or crowded most of the time.
There is a strip mall of stores right behind the main downtown street on Grand River that draws shoppers from the nearby areas. It is across the street from the Farmer's market. There is a grocery store, post office, starbucks, and pharmacy in the downtown area. Many of the places you need are in walking distance if you buy a home in downtown Farmington.
Since 2009, the city's downtown has been the center of an extensive renovation and remodeling featuring a refacing or rebuilding of many buildings on Grand River Avenue, as well as brick paver sidewalks, the Farmington Pavilion, new lighting, and landscaping.
Farmington is a big city urban town with a small town feel. Farmington is a very safe community. You can walk around downtown or down any street and not have the fear of being mugged, hassled, attacked, or raped. It just does not happen on the streets of Farmington. You are not going to get car jacked and your kids are not going to be hassled by a gang member because there are no gangs running the street in Farmington. It is a safe place for you and your family.
It is a nice downtown with summer concerts, a summer craft show, and a farmers market. They are like so many small downtowns putting on little parades and trying to engage and entertain the local residents. They want to make the City of Farmington better. It's a great town to live in. Whether you want to live in a historical home or not you will find a nice home for you and your family whether it is just you or a family of five.
The area is known for one of Michigan's top rated public school systems. Farmington schools will provide your children a safe place to learn. They have some very good teachers in the school system. If you want my opinion I would say .....that Farmington is a community that you want to check out. If you find a home that you like in the downtown Farmington area I would say buy it. You won't go wrong with living in Farmington MI.
